In 1989, a group of widely differing boats set off from Southampton, England, on the first leg of the Whitbread Round the World Race. The race was to prove to be a resounding success for Peter Blake and yacht Steinlager 2, an 84ft ketch, although one of the smallest boats in the fleet, Tracy Edwards' Maiden, a 58ft sloop, crewed by the first ever all-female round-the-world crew, did pretty well too!

Thanks to SOLer WetWing, Sailonline’s database includes the polar of Steinlager 2 so as part of the Sailonline Ocean Championship 2014, the Sailonline Race Committee has decided to include all six legs of the 1989/1990 Whitbread Round the World Race.

The legs are:

1. Southampton, England – Punta del Este, Uruguay
2. Punta del Este, Uruguay – Fremantle, Australia
3. Fremantle, Australia – Auckland, New Zealand
4. Auckland, New Zealand – Punta del Este, Uruguay
5. Punta del Este, Uruguay – Fort Lauderdale, USA
6. Fort Lauderdale, USA – Southampton, England

To make starts DC-able, Sailonline’s Race Committee has made minor adjustments to the real start and finish points – the idea is to provide a clean ocean-racing competition (after all, there are no onshore spectators to appease!).

This will be a magnificent opportunity for SOLers of all ages, not only to recreate a little bit of yachting’s history, but, perhaps, to try and beat the amazing records set by Peter Blake and Steinlager in the original race! Tell everyone to come and recapture yachting history on Sailonline!

Leg 1 starts on 2 January 2014 at 1900utc.

Am I correct in assuming that Leg 2 (Punta del Este, Uruguay – Fremantle, Australia) is really from west to east and not as shown in the logo?
captjack - yes that is correct.

The logo/map used is the Wikimedia Commons image of the original race, which I thought was a nice idea! I didn't even see it could be confusing :-)

Here is some info I just dug up:

I was confused

None so blind
I say go whichever way you want :D
As folks have been confused by the original logo/map of 1989, I shall tweak it on the morrow and repost it! :-D

iomkiwi - the SOL chart of the Legs will, as always, reveal the choices available :-)

We are, simply, racing the original race...

Its now updated.... and I am zonked so heading for my bunk!!

Thanks RC & Race committee... Been waiting for this one for a long time.
2014 Looks to be a mega ocean racing year... First this one and then the V.O.R. starting at the end of the year...
Let's Go!

I like to talk a lot... sometimes I even make sense, mostly not...
Hopefully we can soon be in a position to run more than1 type of boat polar in a race... Seeing as I have the polar for Belmont II as well...

Just Curious . . .

The Map now makes Perfect sense & as this is based on a Historical Race the Legs are as they should be but not having a familiarity with this iconic tradition I was struck by the fact that South Africa was not utilized in lieu of Uruguay being visited twice. Was this an expedient logistical choice or were there other considerations for this particular routing ?
None so blind
1989 was quite a turbulent time here in South Africa. I would suggest the decision was because of the politics here.

Red Eye - Myth of Malham 2025

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
