Was indeed the case. It was at the height of the sanctions and it was a political decision to bypass S.A. (Isolation years)
I like to talk a lot... sometimes I even make sense, mostly not...
My SAF friends in Aus tell me that the sporting sanctions (particularly cricket and rugby) had a greater effect than the economic bans and any diplomatic lobbying against apartheid.

“We may have arrived on different ships, but we are all in the same boat now!” Martin Luther King Jr.
That is correct to a certain degree. S.A. was self reliant to a large extent for quite a number of years. The sport and cultural blockade hurt more for many as it seemed that the world would literally ignore us and pass us by... In other ways it was the silent economic blockade that slowly strangled the business sector as imports of foreign goods was not allowed... Sport was the key though imo... It managed (eventually)to do a lot in ridding S.A of apartheid

Log Entry #01
02JAN1900Z start brought 16kt winds from the south that freshened to the low 20s in the next two hours and clocked marginally.
The fleet fanned out north of the rhumb-line, with no single strategy standing out against the others.
Are there more log entries to come, javakeda? I'm sure it's not only me that (will) appreciate(s) them ;)
Quite so... send them log entries ;-)

Was just thinking it would not only be fun/cool to have log entries from javakeda but also, if we could find em, notes from Steinlager's own sail back in 1989 ... any ideas how we could get hold of them?
That would be incredibly awesome... I'll do some digging if I can get in touch with the navigator on the race (who gave me the boat polar) and see if he has a copy of the log

Does anyone know the leg times in the 1989 whitbread? I can only find the total time and start times.

Red Eye - Myth of Malham 2025

In 1947, Hugh McLean & Sons of Gourock, Scotland built a radical racing yacht for John Illingworth, soon-to-be Commodore of the RORC, to a design by Laurent Giles. With a masthead rig, giving her ‘free’ sail area per the rules of the time, and short overhangs reducing pitching, Myth of Malham went on to win The Fastnet that year and again in 1949, and to compete in numerous Admiral's Cups. In 1958, in honour of the yacht, the Myth of Malham race was conceived - a mini-Fastnet to the first lighthouse on a rock west of Cowes, Eddystone, rather than the second, to be held in non-Fastnet years. IRL this year it has been raced already, but this stops us not from “Red Eye” racing its online 230nm in Fareast 31Rs, leaving how to deal with the Isle of Wight open to your own discretion.

Africa by Sea 2025 - Maputo to Mogadishu

The fifth leg of our exploration of Africa By Sea takes us north along the length of the Continent’s succulent sub-tropical and tropical Indian Ocean coast. Much fought over by traders and colonists both well-before and after a Portuguese expedition under the command of Vasco da Gama first sailed there from Europe back in the 16th century, it is yet to be properly explored as a yachting destination. With plenty of islands off- and inshore, small and very large, there is much to interrupt your 1900nm voyage and visit in your Swan 65, from Maputo to Mogadishu! Race #1858
