Board » General Discussion » Timed races - information

I can't help thinking that more information should be given when a new timed race is announced. Something like:

"Race (name) is now open. This is a timed race so you can choose your own time to start and enter as many times as you like. The link to start second and subsequent races is (hyperlink). You must finish a race before you can enter again. Only your fastest race time will count in the final rankings. The latest time to finish will be xxxx hours on date. Weather updates will be x times daily at xxxx hours and xxxx hours."

I think this would avoid frustration and would help SOL members to plan and race, without the same questions being asked in the forums and in the race chat.
Thanks for the input. You are correct and we are under-manned. I guess this is one of the consequences of not charging our players more than a optional fee for the SYC-membership. I will try to be better and hope for your understanding.

The catch 22 in this is that a more structured information flow would decrease our workload, so I agree 100% that we should strive towards formalizing how we communicate with our fellow skippers.

OK, thank you for your quick replies.
Another clarification on timed races, please. If I register for the race, does the timer start when I load the race, or when I actually start to race(leave the head-to-wind heading)?

Can I sit on the start position and look at the wind forecast for a day or two, then start racing?
Yes, you can sit on the starting line as long as you like to await good weather. The race starts at the time of your first sailing command. (Chats does not count)

I believe that the races with opened start, it is necessary to to say the hour border to be able to do the race. Concretly the race of cowes: when it finishes the time to be able to do the start?

regards: sotil
and a link with abandon/restart ? It would be fantastic.

Does time start being assessed when I register or when I start sailing?

regards: sotil
Sotil, see Jakob's post above. Time starts when you begin to sail the boat. as long as you are at 0* apparent, your timer does not start.

You can register, load the game and then wait until the weather suits you. Don't wait too long, or the game will end.

Red Eye - Key Lime Pie-gatta 2025

Opposite the Bahamas at the tip of the Florida peninsula, we find the Florida Keys, a honky-tonk arpeggio of islands, where another SOL classic, the Key Lime Pie-gatta, so-called after the famous local condensed-milk-based tart speciality, awaits to be navigated once again. We’ll race its “Red Eye” 180nm in very-American Santa Cruz 52s, ignoring such artefacts as bridges, causeways and piers joining the keys one to the other and to the mainland!

Sail Around Turkey 2025

Welcome to the 11th running of one of Sailonline's most iconic races, where our fleet races the length of the Turkish coastline from Hopa (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Black Sea coast) to Iskenderun (the easternmost harbour on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast). It’s a 1,372nm race and aboard our classic, 1st decade of the 21st Century, version 2 IMOCA 60, you should be able to get around the course in less than a week. That is if, of course, once you get out of the Black Sea you don’t stop to enjoy the sights or a BBQ or two in the Golden Horn, or on the Marble Islands, now land-locked Troy or Gallipoli or any of the myriad Aegean islands, that you shall have to carefully navigate past.
