I have connected to the Yahoo Group as well. Looks indeed somewhat better than the Google thing.

I also joined the Yahoo group. But am not that satisfied as most of you =)

Apart from the banners and other uninteresting content around the calendar, my biggest concern is the possibility to embed the calendar in the sailonline website. So far I have not found this feature. And is the calendar public? Or is it only visible to members? That might be unwanted.... calendar should be public / open.

But I'll go with the masses, Google would be my choice, but if you want to go for Yahooo, fine by me...
my other boat is a kiteboard =)
I found this page on the web:

Offshore courses

It describes in detail and with coordinates the 'official' courses for worldrecord attemps...

The 'Around Britain and Ireland' could be a nice race

Another thing I found is this map of the Beagle's route. There is currently a tv-program running on dutch television where they use a clipper stuffed with all kinds of electronics and are remaking the journey as Charles Darwin made it in the 19th century...

RemyBlom - I agree that it looks like we can't / don't want to use yahoo calendar as our public one. It's a bit of a bodge, but it's no problem to link the yahoo calendar to a google calendar for embedding (silly I know). Exporting a nice agenda in text form for inclusion on SOL is also an option.

The layout and ads on Yahoo have always grated on me too, but it does give us an all-in-one solution with solid admin tools.

Maybe tendar functions are worth the price of admission? I like that it can be set up to be as collaborative as possible, rather than relying on a top-down admin system.

I haven't looked yet, but if the database acts at all like a proper database it might be the perfect solution for long term race organising... races already run or proposed searchable by race length, boat type etc would be pretty powerful!

Now that's what I'd call a goldmine! "Official" races, all waypoints given, nice mix of medium and long races, all over the world...
I concur with 76! More than enough races to start the process.
I agree but would suggest we do the SoL races at the same time as the real race; with a view to showing actual racing yachts and SoL yachts on the same chart.

There was one race that did this by putting "@" ahead of the real yachts' name and it was great.

Perhaps a "TICK" option box to show/hide real boats is needed.

We love to do this! ...but sometimes other games gests the official contracts and sometimes it is hard to get hold of traced boat data...
...one of the guys behind the game...
In NZ, we have the Round White Island Race, on November 26th, 330nm, from Auckland to almost East Cape, rounding an active volcano, belching steam and sulphur fumes. I will visit the yacht club today and see if we can get tracking data live and SoL permission tc and send course data to you.

Past map for Auckland to Wellington & Coastal Classic is all OK.
If it breaks, it's not strong enough!

Melbourne to Osaka Prelude 2024

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and is planned to be held again in 2025, so this race is a Prelude in partnership with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organising committee collaborating with the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. On this occasion, we’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat for a long-distance double-handed race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across the track, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!

Cape Town to Auckland 2024

Welcome to the second leg of this Round The World series 2024. It's also the April edition of this year's ocean race championship. The course is the same as the one sailed in 2023, but this year we sail the iconic Swan 65, as suggested in the concluding RTW race last year.
Prepare yourselves for an epic 30-day journey, navigating through the unpredictable waters of the South Seas. It's essential to take care of provisioning to ensure a smooth and enjoyable race experience. With the longer duration, we anticipate plenty of opportunities for camaraderie, competition, and unforgettable memories.
