It has been too long since I posted a verse. What better time than now...

    Ode to Aaron

All around AUS we have raced
ALL 4 Aaron the rest of us chased
And the thoughts of our friend
Shall not come to an end
    His legacy firmly in place

It was Tyger's rare gift we employed
To recall AGage and all he enjoyed
    The competitive edge,
    His life never a "hedge"
But full-on and with hearty "Ahoy!"

The A3 is now at the dock
We think back, reflect and take stock
    Of what it has meant
    To complete this event...
We wish we could tun back the clock.

Our crewmate keeps watch on our fleet
As we BBQ, chat and compete
    His memory stays
With us on through our days
On our reaches, our runs and our beats.

See you over the horizon, mate.
    We miss you.

Laozi... an interesting idea to attend to the PR issue of having to "get to the line" if you have missed the previous PR.

Unfortunately, a drag/drop feature is not possible in the current program configuration. The GOOD news is that we have been working on ideas to improve the entire PR environment. Keep the suggestions coming!!

BTW... months ago, I tried to generate some interest for additional PR sessions. I ran a Midnight Madness (0000UTC) race on the same course at the 1900 (Greenwich Menace) group. The purpose was to engage SOLers in other time-zones that could not make the Euro-start. Had ZERO interest (except SMO, who apparently never sleeps!) Maybe try to resurrect something like that???

JLinc... A terrific idea! We have not been able to arrange buddy-ups with any of the Bermuda race events. I tried a few years ago for the Annapolis/Bermuda, but got no traction.

Do you know anyone in the Marion YC that would be interested to open the dialogue?? If so, let RC know... she is the master at organizing these relationships.

    Hirilondë,
Agree these can be very tricky and the Top-Guns must have a special blend of coffee to allow for limited sleep. I ALWAYS seem to be at a critical juncture during the middle of the night!

That's said, some of these events stretch the talent for calculating and setting DCs which I have found challenging and rewarding. In the current Up Helly, I was on DC from just after Kinnard Head to just before Moray Firth (and had additional DCs set for the rounding that would have worked). I picked up approx 25 places while asleep.

There have been ongoing discussions about having "split fleets" with the insomniacs/maniacs in one group and the cruisers/gotta-get-some-sleep-before-the- kids-wake-up-SOLers in the other.
I am in the latter and have finally (after 2years of never missing a race) accepted the fact that I won't ever make Top10. Too much IRL gets in the way. I just enjoy the effort, challenge and community

Keep SOLing and watch for me at your stern !!

  • Re: Mutiny on the Bounty
Board » Flag Officers » Race proposals
Given the recent loss of the vessel and some crew, would suggest making this a memorial race, something like the A3. Perhaps, after the appropriate interval, even contact the Tall Ship Bounty organization(www.tallshipbounty.org) and ask if a memorial race would be of interest to bring together the organization as a way of remembering the vessel and crew? Would cite our ongoing relationship with other Tall Ship organizations. Their website has been suspended at the moment but there may be others ways of contacting them in the future.

Suggest getting a polar for the Bounty herself instead of a modern platform.

    Just a thought.

Laozi... (an inaccurate moniker BTW as I think you are quite skilled!)

I had many of the same queries when I first joined until I was educated on the origin of SOL.

As I understand it, SOL was originally designed to test polars and VPPs of students @ Sailport. It is also geared toward long-distance/ocean racing such that meteo knowledge and integrating this with the polar characteristics is key. The program assumes you are absolutely perfect at every angle of sail and wind velocity (why wouldn't it, aren't we that way IRL!!) A WHOLE other discussion vis-a-vis routers is included elsewhere in Forum. Some terrific links and info can also be found on AGage's blog at http://soltools.wordpress.com
Though some do not apply to the current GIU, most of it is still gold.

Hope this helps and keep SOLing!!!

AGage is now and will be in every race we hold as the client is his lasting legacy for this special community. His dedication, genius and passion for life, sailing and SOL are evident in each course change we make, each Wx forcast reviewed, each polar explored and on and on.

More than anyone other than my children, the thought of Aaron enters my mind daily as I continue SOLing in his honour.

AG... until we meet over the horizon.

    Your friend and student,

    William/SP

    Scots

Does that mean you can get to the mobile client OR you can access real SOL?? (I doubt the latter due to their non-Flash status) but thought I would check to be sure I don't need to go buy an iPad...TODAY!

As a related idea, we should see if any of our SOL community has knowledge of writing apps in Android- Jelly Bean or ICS.

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Baia de l'Oiseau to Carnarvon

How ever shall I return to report with clarity to my Great Sultan – asked Sinbad. It needs be told this island and all its fables shall be expunged from the annals of every thousand and one night. The wind howls – and sun be none (it’s Winter, Sin’bro, ed.) – and all days from the west, but let’s launch anyway and see if we can work our SOL Balloon north as the days pass aiming for Asthralaya, where The Mahabharata tells the ancients once tested mighty weapons, about a quarter and a million qasbah away (2500nm, ed.), perhaps one month.
