Great thanks Kroppyer, for making us nice instruction files.

The mass * boatspeed = momentum idea, let's think further of that.
Which variables have greatest impact on recovery?

I am very pleased to see the direction this thread has taken lately. Now we are discussing realistic changements to SOL instead of preventing "tacking gamers". Thank you.

Is it possible that the "dev dudes" correct current gybe/tack formula to the more accurate
    e = 1.0-(aftergybe.bs*current performance)/200.0.

I agree with you, Rod, with over 93% ;)

I am sure you have made turning and tacking tests. I am 100% sure that the performance model is unrealistic. I just made one in the Christmas Race. Tack/Gybe from TWA 45 to -130.268 in TWS 5.87 knots the performance went to 96.08 from 100. After gaining performance to 100%, making a 100.268(the .268 is to be sure to get just over 7% performance to loose) degree turn from -130.268 to -30 TWA (without any boatspeed involved in the calculation ??) the holy 93% performance appears. Why has the boatspeed lost influence if you turn your boat?
Sailing VMG upwind in your VO74_v4 you need TWS 28.1(at 45.5 TWA)and downwind TWS 12.47 (at 138.68 TWA), then you reach the 7.01% performance-loss. Is a gybe that much more difficult to make than a tack. I am not trying to explain the performance model, just trying to understand.

I think every SOLer wants a game as realistic as possible, as fair as possible. A2R, has really something there with the boat specific momentum coefficient.

It seems to me that we may start a performance brainstorming thread :)

I can see there are a few SOLers really engaged in the performance model.

In SOL of today, there are obviously a lot of matters, more unrealistic than the performance model. What can it be ?

Is it an improvement of realism to let the SOLers do high numbers of turnings?
Erasing lines of programming code might also make an improvement.

    Kroppyer

I agree with you that the performance model should be explained in the SOL Manual, not how to use the model.

I'm more concerned of the future SOL virtual sailing program. Have the SOL engine creators made any promises to Sailonline NavSim AB, that they will perform improvement or is it up to SOLers with programming skills to create needed code.

Sorry, SOL is just a game we are playing.
I have to play SOL a lot, hopefully I'll get some skills. Excel is helping me with VMG-calculations.

If anyone creates an acceptable solution to improve existing performance, will the SOL engine be updated with that piece of code ?

After reading some of Kroppyer's posts, it seems that we have to make the best of the performance-calculation, just as it is today and update the SOL Client Manual with a lot of tips and tricks.
  • SOL Improvement - BBQ-ing
    Board » General Discussion
Can the thoughts below improve or just mess up our game.

When BBQ-ing it shall not be possible to gain performance while fetching a cold beer in the kithen. The performance have to be 80% when you get off the rocks.

Passing narrow straits on DC:s may content deliberate BBQ:s.
A time penalty (the boat is stucked on the beach to be repaired) will be added the second time the boat is beached. The time penalty will increase for every visit on land.

With no IRL sailing experience, I personally don't find it realistic that a boat can survive much more than one BBQ.

    Try this in Windows 7:
Open Flash Advanced Settings Tab in the Control Panel. Erase all old settings for Flash with the upper right button.
It solved the problem for Klyvarn.

Andaman Islands PYOC 2025

The Andaman Islands are an archipelago, made up of 200 islands, in the northeastern Indian Ocean. Together with the Nicobar Islands to their south, the Andamans serve as a maritime boundary between the Bay of Bengal to the west and the Andaman Sea to the east. These waters will be the theater of our next 240nm race in the ARCH 2025 series. Which one you choose depends only on you, i.e. your Elan 410 sport will leave the Andaman Islands on the starboard or port side.

Isla San Lorenzo RTI 2025

SOL’s SRC (Sailonline Race Committee) has taken us to some unusual places in the past, and San Lorenzo Island off Lima’s Callao peninsula is definitely another one. Housing a naval base and a penal institution, no vessel is allowed within 300m of its shores. Also, with no sources of potable water, it is a matter of debate whether it is an island at all, and not just a large rock. So, whatever you do, don’t be tempted to BBQ; you’ll be arrested and go thirsty! We return for the first time since 2018 to race thirteen potentially unlucky miles in J-30s; have fun!!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra

From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!
