whenever i'm racing i find myself switching to google earth to see where i actually "am". :-) it would be so awesome if you could play the game within google earth. guess thats not quite possible (or is it?), but how about taking google maps as a background instead of the 2-coloured maps only? it would enhance the game big time i think. more realistic.
same thoughts go towards real nautical charts, but i guess thats even further away as they are not freely available.....

my 2 cents to a fantastic game, thanks.
Hi. It is not really practical to play SOL through Google Earth but we do supply overlays. I trust you have seen this page http://www.sailonline.org/races/all/

...one of the guys behind the game...
yeah, i knew its not really possible WITHIN google earth.
but what about replacing the "boring" background in the game and replace it with google maps? then we would be able to sail around "real" rocks instead of squared off yellow blocks.
that was more the direction i was pointing at. :-)
would that be possible (hard) to implement?

Google Maps terms of service would mean that we would have to buy a commercial license of from Google.

We do however have plans to use another map solution (for example custom openstreetmap tiles).
I suggest again using proper nautical charts.

For New Zealand and South West Pacfic, the charts are FREE for downloading in a few different formats.

"LINZ produces official nautical charts to aid safe navigation in New Zealand waters and certain areas of Antarctica and the South-West Pacific."

If it breaks, it's not strong enough!

could it be possible to make the track of each boat visible in google earth (maybe by clicking on it like in the real life AIS file attached)?
how often is the google earth file updated?

I wonder a little bit what all this clutter would really add to the game's pleasure.

Personally, I would prefer SOL to invest in other improvements.
Possily an option then.

Personally I like looking at charts becuase you never know what you might learn.

By contrast the plain blue sea is flat, dull and boring IMHO.
If it breaks, it's not strong enough!

Camel or Balloon - Khartoum to N'Djamena

As there is a lull in the calendar, your PRO has decided to risk an experiment – a balloon race over land, using a workaround to eliminate the recognition of water/land transitions. If it fails, the server may crash, and we abandon PDQ, hopefully after leg 7 of the ABS race to Suez has been decided, and before the start of the 1st OCC of Q4. Camel or Balloon – c 1000 nm from a field on the north bank of the Blue Nile at Khartoum to a field on the north bank of the Chari River at N'Djamena!
