... because you never know what you might learn.
----------
gotta love that phrase. :-)

and i fully support the boring aspect of the plain view.

other than that i don't want my point be missed that the game is way cool! :-)

cheers!

Yes definately a cool game. So much one can learn from GRIB files and sail planning programs.

WHITE ISLAND RACE. Royal Akarana Yacht Club (RAYC) in Auckland, New Zealand are even putting up a SoL divisional prize at their OFFICIAL PRIZE GIVING. A bottle of rum no less.

They are about to email ALL their members to join SoL in the race as well.

A totally different attitude to the RORC / Fastnet situation.

Further this is the first race in RAYC Southern 600 series and we can also race the Auckland to Fiji race next year. Hopefully getting actual fleet positions online as well.

If it breaks, it's not strong enough!
I don't know much about Flash and Actionscript programming, but from what I understand, the Vector graphics in Flash would limit the kind of detail that could be rendered? Certainly not like in Google Earth, or Maps "Satellite" view.
Also more detail means bigger map downloads: Not good for some.

I would have thought using more complicated maps would also complicate collision detection with land?

SOL (imho) is more about the navigational/tactical aspect of sailing, rather than flashy graphics, and I personally think that is good, and any development effort should be in improving the simulation (not that I can think how you could, its pretty darn good already).

This seems a case of, 'It doesnt matter how much the developers do, some will always want more'....
I help develop the client interface for the best online ocean racing sim there is... __/)/)_/)__

Rommel by Balloon 2026 - Through the Sahara

Generalfeldmarschall Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel may have been that chivalrous, gallant tank commander of legend, led astray by the Prussian military traditions of loyalty and chain of command, but one thing he wasn’t, was mad. So, let’s do it anyway – not stick to the coast and the battle for logistical superiority – but depart the oases of Siwa south west into the desert for Agadez and its uranium. And let’s go by balloon, it’s only 2500km (1250nm)!
