I'm in.
I never knew how to use routing software and didn't have time to play with it! Maybe that's why I s*&k in these long distance races!
I think the DC can be tricky, especially with wind shifts and speed. I usually just try to do one leg at a time and hopefully come back in time to check it, before I get grounded or way off course.

Simple equation: R*T=D
Rate * Time = Distance

Hey, this was different.
Typo at start - went 278 (not 268) to position 580+.
Not one single peek until 170 nm from finish. Terrible at first, but all and all great feeling.
Fin pos. #61

Might try it for leg 3 also - with peeks maybe...
It was a great experience. Although my ranking on this one went out the window on the first two days...I've never been one to blindly follow the herd, but I must say that no contact with the fleet is a severe handicap. In sailing there is tactics (positioning your boat with respect to others) and strategy (overall game plan, weather routing, etc.) Without any contact with the fleet you really cannot fine tune your game plan, you just have to hope for the best, and since we are sailing OD (one design) and the caliber of the competition is so good you just can't make a big mistake because the odds of a comeback are not too good. I'll be sailing in the Corinthian Class on Leg 3 just not in the "Hardcore Division"...sorry Mull! I will be taking peeks for 15 minutes at every update. Congrats to Señor Svein winner of the Hardcore Division!! Me quito el sombrero!
Muchas gracias caballero Exmer.
I believe I'll be peeking in leg 3, which looks like it could become a drag race. There is a locomotive coming headed N of West. I'll try get on the back of it. Good winds to all Corinthians.
Oh heck - have some boats finished already :-))

I'm doing leg 3 blind as well - not seen another boat in weeks. last time I was handicapped by access issues, work issues, and memory issues, and my excuse this time will be this lack of work issues and generally being useless.

Can we leave leg 2 open for a little while longer? Like March?
I would be in favour of Corinthian class if it was just 'no routing software' and "no team racing'----but I don't agree with 'no knowledge of rest of fleet'. This was always available by radio, as was the weather. It would certainly be more 'old style' if you only had 'your own weather'
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.
Rod, there is no Rule claiming not to follow the Fleeet for the whole Race. I think, quite a lot, maybe most of us have a peek on the others a few times a day, simulating the oldschool Radio-Call-Ins once or twice a Day for security reasons, as it has been done in the Whitbreads.
FOR ALL CORINTHIAN SOLers:

I wrote a small web proxy in Java to allow you guys to define a 'line of sight' radius and filter out all boats outside that distance, but am having slight technical difficulty with it in the official SOL client, however in implementing my little tool set and showing races within Google Maps (later GE also hopefully), will allow for selective filtering such as this. Not quite ready for public release yet, but hopefully not long ;-)

2 pics cross-posted here, from the NZL race, but check the main thread for more info. (Note: visually it has improved somewhat since these SSs taken)

Edit: Corinthian Mode Proxy is now functioning properly:

Simple usage, just point your browser to the proxy and run it! It defaults to listen on port 8000 and filter out boats outside of a 10Nm radius from your own position, but can be configured. Only commandline atm, but will put on a GUI if people want that. Also for firefox users, there is an addon called FoxyProxy which allows for url patterns to be sent to a proxy only, which is recommended.

Here is a pic of IMOCA Leg 4 with it turned on:

That can be arranged if you like Rod ;-)

Red Eye - Melville Island PYOC 2026

Melville Island is the largest of the Tivi group opposite the port of Darwin in the Timor Sea. Tropically forested and thinly populated, not a lot goes on there, but let’s race around it anyway, lar- or starboard round, it’s a little more than 120nm, so, no matter where you are navigating from on the planet, you will be hard-pressed to complete the course aboard your J-80 in daylight hours!

The third race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us southeastward now down the Pacific, from Guam’s Apra Harbour at 13.5 degrees North, back across the Equator to the glorious New Caledonian resort island of Ouvéa, on the edge of the Tropic of Capricorn at 20.5 degrees South. It’s 2400nm, and there’s more than a few other islands in the way, so mind where you go in your Ocean 50s. Race #1981
