Page: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Next Last

This spring me and a friend started working on an Android Sailonline client just for fun as a hobby project.
But now since it has started to become rather usefull I thought it would be a good idea to let some more people test it. It would also be good to get some feedback on how it works on more devices.

The client is based on google maps with the SOL map closest to your boat drawn as a thin purple line on it. Your boat is diplayed in blue with both twa and cc prediction lines and your competitors are all red (for the moment). The wind is shown with arrows on the map and there are a slider to enable you to examine the weather for 48h. You will of course also be able to change course and if you use the little steering wheel the polar will show in the top left corner of the map with max and min VMG indicated by blue dots.

To install the client on your Android device you need to enable installing applications from "Unknown sources". This option is found under security in settings. Then you just download the sol-client.apk file from here and open it:
http://sailonline.org/static/sol-client.apk
Now it should be installed and you can disable "Unknown sources" again if you like.

The GUI is not that good at the moment and if someone want to help out with GUI layout and graphics that would certainly be appricated.
As I'm doing this for fun and in my spare time any feature request or suggestions will be implementet in the order of the most fun thing for me to do and when I can find the time for it :)

Wonderful!!!

I will try it out soon, but the picture is very promising! I'm in the picture :D which makes me wonder: can you see the names of your competitors?
Yes. If you click on a competitor the name and current ranking will show.
Today our new server is 1 year old and now zappe has made us this, thank you very much for doing this!
I have an iPad mini and have downloaded iOS 8.0. Can someone please direct me to settings/security so I can temporarily turn off 'download from unknown sources'?
My settings screen does not show 'security'.
Many thanks.
OK sorted. iPad will not take this apk but my HTC android mobile phone does.
Excellent.

zappe - first THANK YOU very much for all the time/effort you have put into this app. Its brilliant and a marvellous step forward for Sailonline.

Second, sorry to say but I appear to have encountered a problem when I tried to reload the app/log back into it.

CORRECTION & APOLOGIES: there is no error. My "problem" was because I was not registered in the race. I am leaving the images in case folks want to see what it looks like :-)

After my initial look, I used the menu option to exit.

When I decided to revisit the race I had looked at this is what happened/what I did:

1. Selected icon from favourite apps (where I stored it:

2. Found that I seemed to be still logged in:

3. Tapped on Go to Race but got this error message:

Please let me know what I may have done wrong, and/or what I need to do so that in future I can log out of the application and re-login as/when I choose.

I am using an HTC One SV and because of rubbish battery life like to reduce the number of constantly running apps.

Thanks!

RC, You are not registered in the Fremantle to Bali race.
I downloaded the app, entered username/pwd and selected a race that I am entered in.

At this point I get an error "Unfortunately, SOL Android Client has stopped." There is an OK button to close out the notification, and I'm back in the Apps screen. If I purposefully enter wrong username I get a "failed to login" message. So connection is OK.

I have never used this phone (or Android) until today. Samsung Ace 3. Android V4.2.2. It says that software is up to date. I must be the cause of this.

Thanks,
JJ

Africa by Sea 2025 - Suez to Port Said

When Napoleon (briefly) occupied Egypt at the turn to the 19th C, he ordered his expedition’s Directeur des Ponts et Chaussées, Jacques-Marie Le Père, to evaluate the ancient, derelict, infilled course of a Ptolemaic canal connecting the Red Sea to the Nile via the Great Bitter Lake, versus a new canal to the Mediterranean directly. Neither were considered feasible – locks to climb a pauvre-surveyed 10m sea-level difference, or continuous dredging of the Nile, would both be equally financially prohibitive. Fifty years passed before the unlikeliness of Le Père’s survey finding was challenged and a French Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez obtained a 99-year concession from the Khedive of Egypt, Said Pasha, to construct and operate a canal from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, much against the will of the Ottoman Sultan, Abdulmecid I (the Pasha’s nominal overlord), and the wishes of the (Irish) British prime minister, Lord Palmerston. The year was 1859, the very number of this race (planning, dear boy, planning!), which, despite the canal’s double-super-tanker gauge and lack of locks, is strictly prohibited to sailors IRL. But not SOLers! 85nm in Fareast 28Rs to complete your circumnavigation of Africa!

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Carnarvon to Dondra

From here, our home in Bharatavarṣa is now north west of us – said Sinbad to his fellow balloonists. Perhaps we can ride the wind first further north, and then catch the winds that every year bring the rain, perhaps not. It’s 2600nm and we could be aloft awhile, so, Master el-Quarters, victuals only, no sandbags, provisioning the giant hamper. It will be not a picnic!
